The Portuguese coach looked one of the favourites to take the job at Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson retired, though he ended up back at Chelsea for a second spell when United instead appointed David Moyes.
Still, Collymore believes it may be worth the Red Devils trying for him again after an unconvincing season under current boss Louis van Gaal.
“I’d look to Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, who plays with width, aggression and tempo,” he said.
“The other? A certain Jose Mourinho. It wouldn’t be pretty – but he’d make United winners again. And I’m not sure Louis van Gaal can do that.”
