Never far from the Special One’s side, Rui Faria has learned from the best for nearly 15 years.
Though Jose Mourinho appears very far away from leaving Chelsea, much less retiring from football, the Special One already has in mind who he thinks should replace him.
In an interview with BT Sport via The Express, Jose Mourinho declared that his assistant coach Rui Faria is the best assistant he’s ever worked with and thinks Faria would be his ideal successor at Stamford Bridge.
“If one day I have to choose my successor, if you want to use that, the one that I really feel thinks like… Is adapted to my way of leading, he’s adapted to my way of coaching, he’s the one with more similarities with me even in some traces of personality, is my assistant, Rui Faria,” Mourinho said.
Mourinho and Faria have been inseparable in the coaching ranks for the better part of the last 15 years, with the pair serving together in every stop in Mourinho’s trophy-filled career since U.D. Leiria in 2001.
Rui Faria served as Mourinho’s fitness coach in Leiria and then again at Porto from 2002 to 2004.
When Mourinho was hired at Chelsea in 2004, the Special One named Faria his assistant coach, a position Faria has held at every one of Mourinho’s stops between Internazionale, Real Madrid and now at Chelsea again.
