Down five points after two weeks, Chelsea are making some big changes before the climb gets too hard.
With Man City, Man United and Liverpool all leading Chelsea by five points after just two weeks in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho has decided to make a massive shakeup to his defence.
According to the Metro, Mourinho intends to remove star defender Branislav Ivanovic from the starting XI against West Bromwich Albion this week.
Ivanovic will reportedly be benched in favor of the newly-acquired Baba Rahman while Cesar Azpilicueta moves to the right back position.
The move comes on the heels of a terrible first two games for \Ivanovic, as well as Chelsea captain John Terry – who was subbed off for his first time in over 170 matches under Mourinho since the Special One made his return to Stamford Bridge.
In addition, the Daily Mail reported that Chelsea have not held any conversations with Ivanovic over the possibility of a contract extension.
Ivanovic’s current contract has just one year left on it and the Blues have made it public that they want Everton’s young defensive stud John Stones. Whether Chelsea plan to bring in Stones as an immediate replacement for Ivanovic or the heir-apparent to John Terry remains to be seen though.
Chelsea were shocked in a 2-2 home draw against Swansea City to open the season, losing starting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the process to a red card.
The following week the Blues were humiliated at Etihad Stadium against Manchester City in a 3-0 shutout loss.
Chelsea currently sit 16th on the Premier League table with a win over WBA needed just to bring the club up to 7th.
