Brazil centre back cum midfield player has been one of the Blues’ best performers this campaign.
Spanish giants FC Barcelona want to sign in-demand Chelsea defender David Luiz at the end of the season, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
The shaggy-haired Brazil international has been a huge success at Stamford Bridge since arriving in west London from Portuguese giants Benfica for 25 million Euros in January 2011.
In fact, the UEFA Champions League holders have been so impressed with their 26-year-old centre back since he decided to swap Lisbon for London that they even awarded Luiz a new bumper long-term contract last summer to remain in the capital until 2017.
Luiz has played in 104 matches for the Blues in the past two years, scoring 12 goals in the process – some of them spectacular efforts, such as his stunning effort against FC Basel in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday – and if La Liga champions elect are serious about bringing the player to Camp Nou this summer, then they will likely need to bid somewhere in the region of £40m in order to secure his services.
Chelsea will likely resist any offer, with oligarch club owner Roman Abramovich certainly in no need of funds, but as ever in this age of player power, if David Luiz wants to move to FC Barcelona he will likely do so.
It will be then be down to the Stamford Bridge to negotiate the best price they can for their prize asset.
