The Belgian spent last season on loan at Southampton and thoroughly impressed during his Premier League stint, and The Mirror reports that the Blues are keen on luring the 26-year-old to Stamford Bridge as a potential replacement for Felipe Luis.
Southampton reportedly has the option to sign Alderweireld for £7m, but it is believed he also has interest from Manchester City and Tottenham.
Alderweireld has previously spoken of his desire to remain in the Premier League, but it is understood Atletico are keen to keep hold of the former Ajax man.
According to The Mirror’s report, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keen on Alderweireld as former Atletico man Felipe Luis has struggled to nail down a first team spot since joining the club in the summer.
Luis is expected to re-join Atletico this summer and it’s possible a deal could include Alderweireld going in the opposite direction.
