Imbula remains a target for the Blues.
Despite choosing to join Marseille this summer from Guingamp instead of Chelsea, the Blues have given up hope of signing Gianelli Imbula, according to talkSPORT.
The 21-year-old opted for the Stade Velodrome rather than Stamford Bridge and has impressed for last year’s Ligue 1 runners-up after making a £6.6m switch.
Yet despite this apparent snub by the midfielder, the west London club are still keeping tabs and may move to try and sign Imbula in the near future.
The France under-21 international general operates in defensive midfield, but has been known to push further forward and can also be utilised at left-back.
Since moving to Marseille Imbula has made six appearances in all competitions, including a start in Champions League as the French club lost their opener 1-2 to Arsenal.
The midfielder is one of a number of young talents emerging from the nation, along with the likes of Geoffrey Kondogbia, Paul Pogba and Gunners new boy Yaya Sanogo.
Chelsea were busy in the transfer market this summer despite the fact Imbula decided not to come to the Bridge – although fellow youngster Marco Van Ginkel has been ruled out for the season after arriving from Vitesse Arnhem for £8m.
There is a plethora of young talent at manager Jose Mourinho’s disposal, as the Blues attempt to work around the Financial Fair Play ruling by buying stars when they are in their teens/early 20s and then nurturing them via loan spells.
This has so far worked to good effect with Belgian trio Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
