West London club hoping to take advantage of current uncertainty surrounding England attacker’s Old Trafford future.
Wayne Rooney told Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he wanted to leave the Premier League champions back in February as Chelsea emerge as favourites to sign the front man at the end of the season, reports the Daily Mail.
Rooney, 27, has already demanded a move away from Old Trafford once before in his career when three years ago he asked for a transfer to United’s arch-rivals Manchester City, only to be told in no uncertain terms by manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he was going nowhere.
However, it appears as though the England international has once again grown tired of life in the north west after nine years with the top-flight giants and now wants to seek a new challenge in his career.
Rooney has a contract with United until 2015 and with the club having issued a statement late on Wednesday night saying the player was not for sale, Chelsea will need to break the bank this summer in order to lure Rooney to west London.
