Doubts continue to grow over forward’s future in the north west.
New Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho has indicated that the west London club could be interested in signing Manchester United front man Wayne Rooney this summer, reports the Daily Express.
The England international has been the subject of intense speculation of late linking the striker with a move away from the Premier League champions, after it had been reported by previous Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson that Rooney had asked for a transfer away from Old Trafford towards the back end of the previous campaign.
Rooney, 27, was reportedly frustrated at being substituted in a number of high-profile fixtures last season, as well as not starting the second leg of United’s crucial home Uefa Champions League round-of-16 clash with Real Madrid.
And now the incoming Blues boss has given a strong hint that he wants to bring the striker, who netted 16 goals in 36 appearances for United last season, to Stamford Bridge when the summer transfer window reopens for business on July 1, saying in the press conference that unveiled the Portuguese in his second spell in the capital: “Rooney is at a fantastic age. He has maturity, big experience, and he’s still young.
“It’s up to him what he wants, what makes him happy. He’s a bit like me: he doesn’t need one more pound on his contract. One more cup won’t make a difference.
“Be happy. Where will he find more happiness to have the ambition and drive him? I like him as a boy. I wish him well and hope he is happy.”
