Stamford Bridge attacker could join home town club this summer after Chelsea record transfer fails to work out.
Atletico Madrid hope to sign Fernando Torres from Chelsea this summer, according to the Sun.
Torres started his career with the Spanish capital side, becoming known as El Nino (The Kid) having come through the youth ranks at Vicente Calderon and a return to his old side would most likely be welcomed by the fans.
Atleti boss Diego Simeone actually played with Torres for a brief period when the latter player broke through to the first team, and Chelsea are unlikely to stand in their way.
Torres, who is now 30 years of age, has not lived up to his £50 million price tag upon moving to Stamford Bridge, managing just 19 Premier League goals since he arrived in west London in January 2011.
Luis Suarez, who replaced Torres at Anfield, has managed 63 top flight goals in the same period.
Given Torres’ exorbitant salary, and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s admission that he will look to sign a top class centre forward this summer, Atletico Madrid will be hopeful of a cut price deal.
