Reports over the weekend suggested that Jose Mourinho sent a team of scouts over to Lisbon to watch the Argentine winger in action, and though the likes of United, PSG, Monaco, Valencia and Zenit St Petersburg have all expressed an interest, Stamford Bridge would be his most likely destination.
It is believed that Gaitan only wants to join a club that has a realistic chance of winning the Champions League, and with Jose Mourinho already having an established relationship with the player a possible move to wet London looks favourable.
Gaitan shares an agent with Mourinho, Jorge Mendes, who is said to be wary of dealing with Manchester United having played a key role in the moves of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria last summer.
With both stars struggling for form, Chelsea may decide to activate his £30m release clause and present themselves as a greater alternative.
