Blues hope to be able to tie up a deal for ex-Liverpool star imminently.
Chelsea’s hopes of signing Real Madrid midfield player Xabi Alonso this summer have been given a huge boost with the news that los Blancos are on the verge of landing Real Sociedad’s Asier Illarramendi, reports the Daily Star.
The west London club have been keeping close tabs on the experienced Spain international for some time now, with a view to bringing the 31-year-old to Stamford Bridge when the transfer window reopened on July 1.
And following the news in Spain that the Liga giants have moved a step closer to finding a replacement for Alonso in the form of up-and-coming Real midfield player Illarramendi, the former’s move to the Blues could now be back on the cards.
Alonso has been in the Spanish capital for the past four seasons now, having originally signed for Madrid from Liverpool for £30 million in Aug 2009 and in the intervening four-year period the defensive midfield player has featured in 192 matches in all competitions for Madrid, scoring six goals in the process.
And with the Spaniard now only having one year left on his current contract at Madrid, and with no sign of the player being offered a new deal to remain in Spain, Chelsea should be able to secure Alonso on the cheap this summer.
