AS Roma are considering letting Chelsea target Mehdi Benatia move to Stamford Bridge -but only if the Blues agree to part ways with star striker.
Serie A giants AS Roma are well aware of Chelsea’s interest in their defender Mehdi Benatia, and the Italian giants may be scheming to make the situation work in their favour.
Reports in The Daily Express reveal that Roma are ready to let go of the Moroccan, provided the west Londoners agree to let Romelu Lukaku move the other way.
The highly-rated Belgian is reported to have become disillusioned with his stay at Stamford Bridge, following his repeated loan moves to other Premier League sides.
“You know Chelsea: every year they buy a new top striker,” said Lukaku.
“I remember me coming into the dressing room last year and seeing Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba and going: ‘Whoah! What’s happening here?’
“But no problem. Many clubs are interested in me.
“At this stage I have to look to myself. I have to play a good World Cup.
“That’s very interesting for all the players looking for a transfer, and I must be one of them. Chelsea know my point of view.”
There were also reports of a rift between him and manager Jose Mourinho last season, following which it has been believed that the player may try to force a move away from the club.
On the other hand, Benatia has become an important target for the Blues, now that David Luiz has moved to Paris Saint-Germain.
Hence, it would come as little surprise if the above reports indeed turn out to be true and a swap deal could well be on the cards.
