Croatian star has endured an up-and-down debut campaign in La Liga.
Incoming Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho wants to challenge Manchester United for the signature of in-demand Real Madrid midfield player Luka Modric this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.
The skilful Croatia international has only been at the Santiago Bernabeu for just the one season now, having signed for Los Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £33m last August.
However, the impish creator has found it hard to settle in the Spanish capital and is reportedly keen to make a swift return to the English Premier League when the transfer window once again opens for business on 1 July.
Modric, 27, does have a contract with the Spanish giants that runs until the end of June 2017 and so the playmaker will not come cheap this summer.
And now Mourinho intends to go head to head with the Premier League champions in order to lure the player to Stamford Bridge next season as opposed to Old Trafford.
Modric registered 17 goals and 26 assists in 159 matches for Spurs in his four years at White Hart Lane.
