Clearly touched by their support, Lampard took to the mic and responded: “I’ll be back”.
While it is unlikely that the 37-year-old will now return as a player for Jose Mourinho, given his standing and support at the club, it would come as no surprise if he returned in a coaching position further down the line.
However, for now, the former England international will be focused on making his move to MLS a success and he will undoubtedly be relishing the opportunity to play alongside Andrea Pirlo in a star-studded midfield for New York City FC.
