Former Chelsea and France centre-half Marcel Desailly thinks Rooney’s interest in the Blues was a trick…
Ex-Chelsea defender, and French World Cup winner Marcel Desailly, reckons Wayne Rooney only flirted with the Blues to earn a bumper new contract with Manchester United, reports the Daily Star.
The Rooney to Chelsea transfer saga dominated tabloid column inches this summer, although in reality – United never had any intention of selling the 27-year-old England forward, and especially not to a direct title rival.
Chelsea had two bids turned down – and eventually settled for Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o instead.
Desailly reckons Rooney was simply manufacturing himself a new contract at the Premier League champions, and never really had any intention of joining their London rivals.
“I wasn’t really sure he wanted to make a move to Chelsea,” said Desailly, who won 116 caps with France.
“I think it is more business, than a desire to move from the club.
“Three years ago he was very clever telling the club that he wants to move to Manchester City. The club have allowed him to get the biggest salary and sign a new contract,” he continued.
“This time I think they have tried again – it is business, they play the game and try to earn more.”
Rooney scored his first goal of the season at the weekend with a sumptuous freekick against Crystal Palace – and all the unrest seemed forgotten.
With United adamant they will not sell the player, Rooney has either resigned himself to seeing out the rest of his contract – or perhaps, like Desailly has intimated – he purely wanted a bumper new deal.
