Chelsea will make a move for Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic as soon as the deal for Juan Mata has been finalised.
The Spain international is set to sign on at Stamford Bridge subject to a medical after Valencia accepted a £23.5m bid from the Londoners and now Jovetic could be joining him. The 21-year-old Montenegro international is a highly-rated forward who sprung into the consciousness of observers on these shores with an excellent brace against Liverpool in the Champions League as an 18-year-old in 2009. His development has been stymied by injury problems including a cruciate ligament injury that ruined the 2010/11 campaign but Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas feels that it is worth taking a risk on the p[layer.
The Portuguese has been less than impressed with some of Chelsea’s forward play over the first two matches of the season despite the wealth of options at his disposal. Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda have disappointed in the support striker roles and look to be on their way out of the club and a new attacking triumvirate incorporating Fernando Torres, Mata and one other, possibly Jovetic.
Although initially valued at around the £20m mark, Villas-Boas is confident that he can pick up the hitman for as little as £10m.
