Varane was once described as ‘the best young defender in the world’ by Stamford Bridge chief Jose Mourinho – and reports suggest that he is keen to bring the Frenchman to Stamford Bridge as he prepares for life after current central defensive pairing Gary Cahill and John Terry.
Manchester United are also interested, however – and the Red Devils arguably have a greater need for a central defender, meaning that they may be able to offer Varane the immediate first team action that he craves.
