Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has signed with AC Milan, passing up on Chelsea and Man United in the process.
According to the Express, AC Milan moved quickly on Witsel after losing out on Geoffrey Kondogbia – who signed with Serie A arch-rival Inter Milan last week. The 26-year-old Belgian had played for Zenit Saint Petersburg on a five-year, €40 million contract since 2012.
Witsel led Zenit Saint Petersburg to the Russian Football Premier League Championship this past year, which included 29 straight weeks at the top of the league’s table and an eight-match winning streak that broke the previous Russian Premier League record.
With an estimated £53 million in fresh cash thanks to recent foreign investment, AC Milan has been eager to make a big splash in Serie A with their new capital.
The Express reported that Chelsea had made a £24m offer to Zenit Saint Petersburg for Witsel, but it appears that AC Milan won the Belgian star over.
