Mourinho insists that the Spaniard is part of the Blues’ plans.
Despite Juan Mata sitting on the bench during Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Manchester United on Monday, Jose Mourinho says the midfielder is part of the club’s plans.
Mata has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge even though the Spaniard was arguably the Blues best player last term and clubs such as Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have been keeping tabs.
However, Mourinho has reiterated that the 25-year-old will not be sold and that the manager had reasons for not playing the midfield ace against United.
“It was my option [choice],” the 50-year-old was quoted by ITV.
“He didn’t play against Man United, it was my option. I have always reason for the options.
“I think he’s a very important player for us. He wants to be a very important player for us.
“He wants to stay. I want him to stay, the club want him to stay.”
Mourinho’s side are preparing to take on Bayern Munich in the Super Cup on Friday in a repeat of the 2012 Champions League final.
It will also be the first time that the Portuguese maestro will come up against Bayern manager Pep Guardiola since the two were in charge of La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Even though the manager has huge amounts of support at the Bridge, selling Mata would have been a hugely unpopular decision with the fans due to the Spain international’s influence last term.
