Inter Milan have reportedly set their sights on Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel as a contingency signing.
According to the Daily Mail, Mikel is the backup plan for the Serie A powerhouse in the event they fail to secure the transfer of Galatasaray’s Felipe Melo. Mikel is coming off a down year in which he lost the majority of his playing time to Nemanja Matic, but the Daily Mail reports that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is still keen on keeping the 28-year-old Nigerian at Stamford Bridge.
One of the veteran players for the Blues, Mikel missed several months of action last season following knee surgery but is still a very gifted defensive midfielder. However, the ascension of Ramires could still spell the exit for Mikel, since the team appears poised to prioritize Ramires for a contract extension very soon.
Mikel owns just one league goal and four total goals since joining Chelsea out of Lyn in 2006. He has made 221 appearances and was named Chelsea’s Young Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008.
