Chelsea look to step on Liverpool’s toes in the transfer market, with the Metro reporting that the Blues are set to open talks with one of Brendan Rodgers’ left back targets, Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.
Both clubs are on the hunt for a new left back this summer, with Chelsea looking to replace experienced international Ashley Cole who left the on a free transfer and Liverpool hoping for an upgrade on Spaniard Jose Enrique.
Liverpool had initially looked like to secure a deal for Alberto Moreno from Sevilla, but wrangling over a potential fee seemed to scupper that deal, with the Reds now potentially turning their sights on Ryan Bertrand, who is also surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
Another name that had been mentioned as a potential solution for the Reds was Rojo – but it now appears as though the Argentina international could be set for a move to join Mourinho in West London.
Rojo has been one of few Argentina players to impress consistently at this World Cup, impressing with his direct overlapping runs from the full back position, qualities that have attracted the interest of potential Premier League suitors.
Chelsea had been seemingly closing in on a deal for Brazilian left back Filipe Luis, but by moving for Rojo it is clear that Mourinho isn’t afraid to take a look at alternative options.
