The German international is set to be available on a free transfer at the end of this season, having rejected the chance to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu after seemingly deciding to embark upon a new challenge elsewhere.
Khedira first joined Real from Stuttgart in 2010, and has proven a key player for the Spanish giants, playing under current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho as they won La Liga in the 2011/12 season.
Still, increased competition for places in Real’s midfield this season looks set to force the player out, and it could be that Mourinho will try to reunite with his former player at Stamford Bridge next season.
Schalke are also mentioned by the Telegraph as an interested party, but Chelsea will now hope they can swoop for this potentially superb bargain signing.
