Asmir Begovic 4/10
A nightmare debut for the signing from Stoke City. Was stitched up by Terry for the first goal, although he could have been stronger at the feet of the New York goalscorer, and spent most of the rest of his Chelsea bow picking the ball out of his own net.
John Terry 4/10
Chelsea’s captain produced the mistake which prompted their second-half disaster, leaving Begovic too much to do with a short back-pass. He then failed to organise a shaky defence which leaked three more on a rare off night.
Ola Aina 5/10
The youngster managed just 28 minutes before he was sacrificed for another striker.
Nemanja Matic 4.5/10
Usually the rock in front of Chelsea’s back four, Matic’s introduction at the interval only made Chelsea more leaky. It was a rusty display from the Serbian enforcer.
Ramires 5/10
Failed to clear the cross which led to New York’s third goal. At the other end, a couple of wayward passes saw Chelsea squander opportunities on the counter-attack.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek 5.5/10
Singled out by Mourinho as one for the future at Stamford Bridge, the teenage midfielder continued his integration into the first-team picture with 45 minutes in which he went largely unnoticed.
Eden Hazard 6.5/10
Fired Oscar’s cut-back into the bottom corner to bring Chelsea back to 3-2, but his defence let him down two minutes later as the Red Bulls restored their two-goal advantage.
Diego Costa 7/10
The striker is the type of footballer who does not understand the friendly element of a pre-season game. Although he missed a couple of good chances, Costa was a relentless nuisance to the New York defence.
Dominic Solanke 6/10
Currently fulfilling the role of third striker, the youngster might be granted a loan move once Radamel Falcao joins up with his new teammates.
