Chelsea lost 1-2 to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge in one of the shock results of the Premier League season. Read manager and player ratings here.
MANAGER:
Jose Mourinho – 5/10
Jose Mourinho selected a team that was rather devoid of creativity and goal threat in the absence of Eden Hazard, with only Willian looking capable of dissecting the Sunderland defence.
The Blues boss could have selected Frank Lampard for his ability to find the back of the net alongside Nemanja Matic instead of the athleticism of Ramires, or Andre Schurrle alongside Willian and Mohamed Salah in attacking midfield, but played it too safe.
His team played with one eye on the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Atletico Madrid, so Mourinho will hope that his team can perform in midweek.
PLAYERS:
Mark Schwarzer – 5/10
With Petr Cech sidelined due to a virus, Australian veteran Mark Schwarzer took his place.
The 41 year-old looked decidedly rusty, and fumbled Marcos Alonso’s shot from the edge of the box into the path of Connor Wickham, who equalised for Sunderland.
John Terry – 7/10
John Terry was solid enough at the back, with both Sunderland goals the result of individual errors. The Blues skipper has been arguably the best central defender in the Premier League this season.
Gary Cahill – 7/10
Gary Cahill has had a brilliant season for Chelsea, and looked as composed as ever. Should John Terry and Frank Lampard leave Stamford Bridge at the end of their contracts, Cahill would be a prime contender to become the new Blues captain.
