The Reds are keen to tie the 19-year-old down to a new deal, with reports that Sterling wants £100,000-a-week if he is to commit his future to the Merseyside club.
This would be a huge financial risk considering the teenager is still relatively unproven, but his brilliant form over the past 18 months for both club and country suggests that perhaps they should take the gamble.
If they do not then the Blues are ready to pounce as manager Jose Mourinho turns his attention away from Everton’s Ross Barkley to another England international.
With Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard leaving Stamford Bridge this summer and John Terry approaching the end of his career the English contingent at the club is weakening.
Mourinho needs a certain among of homegrown talent to adhere to UEFA’s rules and would like to bring in someone with the talent and potential of Sterling to fit that criteria.
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the forward, who has scored 15 goals in 87 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side since breaking into the first team back in 2012.
