Chelsea are considering making a massive fourth bid for Everton defender John Stones, according to reports.
The Blues saw its third bid of £30m turned down by the Toffees this week, however, The Guardian reports the Premier League champions are now weighing up a £40m bid for the 21-year-old.
Should Chelsea table the bid, it means the London club will have doubled its initial valuation of the former Barnsley defender.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has insisted the player is not for sale, but a bid of £40m would surely turn the heads of the Toffees’ top brass.
Chelsea’s defence was torn to shreds by Manchester City on Sunday, with captain John Terry benched at half-time as City ran out rampant 3-0 winners.
Mourinho is keen to bolster his squad before the end of the summer transfer window, but it remains to be seen if Roman Abramovich is keen to splash £40m on the young defender.
