Chelsea are ready to ramp up their pursuit of young Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane, according to reports from the Daily Star, with Jose Mourinho keen to add a top class replacement for David Luiz to his ranks.
Mourinho is known to be a keen admirer of Varane, having once described the Frenchman as ‘the best young central defender in the world’ when he was manager at the Bernabeu.
Varane is reported to be happy to stay at Real Madrid – but only if manager Carlo Ancelotti can give him assurances about regular first team appearances next season as the Frenchman looks to establish himself as a key member of the Real set-up.
The former Lens player signed to Real Madrid as a teenager and quickly made an impression on Mourinho and his staff at the Bernabeu, going on to become an important first team player and impressing hugely in the 2014 Champions League final victory over Atletico Madrid.
Despite this, however, there is plenty of competition for a regular place in the team at Real Madrid, and the club are considering lettering Varane go if they cannot satisfy his demands for football.
Mourinho would be likely to be all too happy to bring him to Stamford Bridge, with the Portuguese manager on the hunt for a central defender to replace David Luiz, who was sold to Paris Saint Germain for around £50 million this summer.
