Key man – Diego Costa
With new signing Falcao in need of rediscovering his confidence, Remy not a 90 minute performer and Patrick Bamford out on loan, Chelsea need Costa fit.
Mourinho has worryingly revealed that the former Atletico Madrid striker could be absent for Saturday’s opening game of the season versus Swansea City, and confessed that he is concerned by the centre-forward’s fitness.
He missed the end of last term, but fortunately for Chelsea, their work was already done.
However, a blistering start is essential if they wish to retain the title, and the absence of Costa could prove a serious blow.
Young player to look out for – Kurt Zouma
Zouma, 20, was a surprise revelation in west London last season.
The young defender – deployed in midfield and at centre-back – played a key role in their Capital One Cup triumph and in such crucial victories as those over Manchester United in the second-half of the campaign.
While his physical style of play is far from a joyous spectacle, he offers that grit and determination that derives from a young player with – not only raw talent – but an enthusiasm that on occasion seems to missing from the Chelsea midfield.
Expect to see Zouma more often in the new season.
