Napoli have turned down an offer for Algerian left back Faouzi Ghoulam, according to Football Italia, with Chelsea reportedly having made the advance for the player who thoroughly impressed watchers at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Jose Mourinho is on the look-out for a new left back after experienced former Arsenal man Ashley Cole left Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this summe, with Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta likely to be moved back to his natural position on the right hand side of the defence.
The main contender had appeared to be Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title-winning left back Filipe Luis, but with that deal seemingly no nearer to completition, it appears as though Chelsea are starting to sound out alternatives.
Ghoulam is one of Serie A’s most impressive left backs, having enjoyed a fine six-months at the San Paolo since he signed for the club from French Ligue 1 club St. Etienne in the winter transfer window.
Capable of bursting forward and supporting attacks with his pace and impressive left-foot, the French-born player is also an impressively solid defender, perhaps making him ideal for a Jose Mourinho team.
It is not clear what size the bid for Ghoulam was made at or whether Chelsea are likely to make another move for the player, but it does seem that the Blues are willing to move on to other targets if the Luis deal cannot be pushed through.
