Blues will not be held to ransom over purchase of Uruguay striker.
Chelsea will only pay £40 million to sign in-demand Napoli front man Edinson Cavani this summer, says the Daily Star.
The red-hot Uruguay international is currently at the centre of transfer tug-of-war between the west London club and Spanish giants Real Madrid, with his employers in southern Italy demanding that any prospective buyer meets their £53.5m valuation of the centre forward, which is the price of the buyout clause in Cavani’s current contract in Naples.
However, the Blues’ billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly unwilling to pay more than £40m for the prolific marksman, who netted an incredible 38 goals in just 43 contests in all competitions for Napoli last season, including an equally impressive 29 strikes in only 34 Serie A contests.
As a result, the Stamford Bridge outfit may now switch their focus elsewhere, with the likes of Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko and Zenit St Petersburg forward Hulk both said to being considered by the club as alternatives to Cavani.
