Coveted marksman has been deemed surplus to requirements in Bavaria.
New Napoli head coach Rafa Benitez wants to make unsettled Bayern Munich front man Mario Gomez his first signing ahead of the new season in Italy, according to reports in German magazine Kicker.
The deadly Germany international has just endured a tough campaign at the Allianz Arena, spending large parts of the season warming the substitutes’ bench for the Bavarian giants.
In total, the 27-year-old appeared in only 21 Bundesliga fixtures for the German outfit, finding the back of the net on 11 occasions, while overall the marksman made 31 appearances in all competitions for the club, netting 17 goals.
However, with fellow striker Mario Mandzukic having now overtaken Gomez in the attacking pecking order in Munich, and with Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski also expected to soon sign for the club, Gomez is likely to depart the Uefa Champions League holders this summer.
And high-flying Napoli – ironically managed by recently departed ex-Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez – are now putting their names forward, along with the Blues, in the race to land the in-demand forward.
