Chelsea look set to win the battle for highly rated AS Roma centre back Mehdi Benatia, with the Daily Star reporting that the Blues are set to secure a deal with £30 million for the Moroccan international.
Benatia enjoyed a superb season for Roma in Serie A last season, helping them maintain one of Europe’s finest defensive records, which has led to Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United both being linked with a swoop for the player.
It appears that it will be Chelsea who win the race for Benatia, however, with the report suggesting that Jose Mourinho’s attention has been turned towards the Moroccan after Real Madrid indicated that young Frenchman Raphael Varane was not for sale.
Mourinho is yet to directly replace Brazilian David Luiz, who was sold to Paris Saint Germain for a fee of around £50m this summer, with 27 year-old Benatia potentially now being that man.
