Luiz and the Liverpool defender are thought to be the most probable targets.
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has revealed that the Spanish champions are looking to sign one more player this summer as David Luiz of Chelsea and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger are the most likely targets, reports El Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalans have already been busy in the transfer market with the arrival of £48.6m striker Neymar from Santos, but defence is still an issue for the club.
Barca struggled at the back with captain Carles Puyol constantly fighting for fitness and Javier Mascherano and Adriano being used out of position as centre-backs.
Therefore Rosell’s comments suggest that defensive targets could be the priority.
“We are trying to strengthen but not all conditions in a transfer are right and the attention has to be turned elsewhere. But our aim is to bring someone in before August 31,” the president said.
With first choice targets Thiago Silva and Marquinhos both unavailable, the Spanish giants have instead turned their attention to the Premier League.
Luiz had a superb second season with the Blues in 2012/13, but it’s thought that returning manager Jose Mourinho is unsure of the Brazilian’s defensive capabilities.
Barca meanwhile are keen admirers of the 26-year-old and reports have been circulating that the La Liga holders would be prepared to offer £40m for the defender.
However, if it proves too costly to bring the Brazil international to the Nou Camp then Reds stalwart Agger is another possibility for the Catalonia outfit.
The Dane is the third highest paid player at Anfield after captain Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, but Barca would be prepared to up those fees and pay Liverpool handsomely for the 28-year-old.
