Chelsea left back Ashley Cole has confirmed his retirement from international football after a 107 cap career that took in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships.
The 33 year-old was called by Roy Hodgson today and, having been told that he would not feature at this summer’s tournament in Brazil, decided to call time on his international career.
The former Arsenal star took to Twitter to announce his decision.
I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now.

We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything

#Baines and #shaw are great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get #107 caps #eng

Like me or not, trust me it's hurt me to stop playing for my country #proud and #honoured
While Cole hints that Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw will go to the 2014 FIFA World Cup with England this summer, Roy Hodgson has not yet confirmed it.
