The defender had to be substituted after picking up the problem against Norwich.
It was a a good weekend in the Premier League for Chelsea, as the side overcame a potentially tricky away tie to Norwich City with a 1-3 win.
However, there was one negative that will also worry England fans as Ashley Cole had to be substituted in the second half after struggling with a rib injury.
The extent of the problem is unknown as yet, but there is a strong possibility that the left-back will miss the Three Lions’ vital upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Montenegro and Poland.
“He is having this little problem for quite a while,” Blues manager Jose Mourinho said of Cole after the Norwich victory, as quoted by the Guardian.
“He was feeling it hard in the ribs but I didn’t change him because of that. I changed him [to have] an option in the game, a tactical decision, but I realise the situation before was difficult for his condition.
“It is my concern because I want England to do well and my players to play for their national team. But we need to assess the injury.”
England face two tough home fixtures on Friday and then the following Tuesday, knowing that two wins will definitely see the side book a place at the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
This is by far a given though, as the team have been steady if uninspiring so far in qualifying and drew their previous matches with Poland and Montenegro.
If Cole is unavailable then the in-form Leighton Baines of Everton is almost certain to fill in, with Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs the most likely to be called up as the full-back’s replacement.
