Cole wants to convince Mourinho the defender deserves a new contract.
For the first time since a 2006 transfer from Arsenal, Ashley Cole is no longer first choice at left-back at Chelsea, but the defender has no intention of leaving, reports the Telegraph.
The 32-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer and the full-back has been linked with a transfer to MLS – with both LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls.
However, Cole has no intention of departing the Blues for America and wants to stay and fight for a place in west London, also convincing Jose Mourinho to give the England international a new contract in the process.
Mourinho has preferred Cesar Azpilicueta on the left side of defence for much of the season, despite the fact that the Spaniard is naturally a right-back.
Admittedly this is partly due to the fact that Cole has struggled with a rib injury for some time, but the Englishman has also looked off the pace in many games.
The defender has started 10 matches in all competitions, but hasn’t played for the Blues since November 2 and Azpilicueta has been introduced since.
The west London club have been strongly linked with a number of left-backs this year, with Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao and Luke Shaw of Southampton seemingly the favourites.
It’s been a difficult few months for Cole, who has also fallen behind Everton ace Leighton Baines in the race for a place in England starting XI.
