Stories claiming the Nigeria international is set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season have been gathering pace recently, and John Shittu, his agent, has done little to stop the rumours.
“I can’t talk about anything regarding reports linking John with Real Madrid because he’s still a Chelsea player,” he said.
Southampton are also thought to be taking a close interest in developments as they look to make their own move to bring him away from west London.
With his own defensive midfield star, Morgan Schneiderlin, still the subject of intense transfer speculation, Saints chief Ronald Koeman is looking to Mikel as a replacement enforcer.
However, the move to Madrid would likely be much more lucrative, and it will now depend on whether Jose Moutinho would be willing to let him move on.
