Chelsea owned Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois is not keen on staying at Stamford Bridge when his loan spell at Atletico Madrid expires at the end of this season, IBTimes reports.
The 21-year-old has excelled in La Liga this season for the club that currently top the table, but he still belongs to the Premier League giants, who signed him two and half seasons ago before sending him on loan to Atletico.
Courtois’s father has claimed that his son is not prepared to battle Petr Cech for the no.1 spot at Stamford Bridge though, and essentially given Chelsea a ‘Cech or Courtois’ ultimatum.
“Chelsea have a good goalkeeper in Cech, so cohabitation with both is not possible,” said Courtois senior.
“Alternating between the two is possible on paper but this is not what we want. This is not a situation we want.
“For now, we expect to discuss with Chelsea but it is impossible for Courtois to join a club to be their number two, and the conclusion is the same for Petr Cech.”
Manager Jose Mourinho will have to decide in the summer whether to cash in on Courtois, who would likely generate a very large transfer fee, or to replace Cech with super talented Belgian.
Cech is only 31-years-old, and is entering his peak goalkeeping years, so it remains to be seen whether Mourinho will stay loyal to the stalwart Chelsea keeper, or put his faith in Courtois instead.
