The rejuvenated Spanish star faces a long time out for the Blues…
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres could face up to four games on the sidelines through suspension after his actions in his side’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane, reports the Mirror.
Despite playing arguably his best match for Chelsea all season, the 29-year-old Spaniard was sent off late on for an innocuous challenge on Jan Vertonghen which earned him a second yellow card. Although the sending was off was unarguably harsh, Torres will not be able to appeal the decision as it came through two yellow cards instead of a single red.
Earlier in the match however, Torres scraped his fingers done Vertonghen’s face, and he could be cited for incident, as referee Mike Dean didn’t see it. This could earn him a further three match ban, if he faces a further disciplinary charge.
If this happens, Torres will become the first player analyses by the Premier League and FA’s new video panel of former referees, created to deal with unsavoury or ambiguous unseen incidents.
If Torres did receive the lengthy ban, he would miss league matches against Cardiff City, Manchester City and Norwich, and a League Cup tie against Arsenal.
Jose Mourinho would only have out of touch strikers Demba and Samuel Eto’o to choose from, neither of whom have scored a goal this year.
