Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is set to turn to a familiar face as he seeks to improve his club’s strike force ahead of the new season, with the Daily Star linking the Magpies with a move for former centre forward Demba Ba from Chelsea.
The 29 year-old Senegalese international only made the move from St. James’ Park to Stamford Bridge in January 2013, with his impressive goalscoring record for Newcastle persuading then Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez to bring him to the capital.
Ba hasn’t quite recaptured his Magpies form for his new club, however, despite chipping in with some key goals – largely because he remained behind the likes of Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o in the pecking order, a situation unlikely to change with Jose Mourinho’s capture of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.
Newcastle are in need of a new striker, with loanee and last season’s top scorer Loic Remy having returned to Queens Park Rangers after his loan spell with the club, although the report also tentatively links Pardew with a possible permanent move for the French international.
Long-serving forward Shola Ameobi has been released, however, and Papiss Cisse continues to fail to hit the heights that he did when partnering Ba, making a move for him look even more attractive from a Newcastle perspective.
