The stars that the new manager has his eyes on.
It could be a busy summer of transfers for Manchester United as they prepare to bounce back from a disappointing 2013/14 campaign.
Under the guidance of David Moyes the Red Devils endured their lowest ever Premier League points tally and also failed to qualify for European football for the first time since 1981.
This failure inevitably cost the Scot his job and in replacing the 51-year-old United have turned to a more experienced head in Louis van Gaal.
The current Netherlands head coach will take charge after the 2014 World Cup and will already be plotting how he can improve the squad in the transfer market.
So here are five players van Gaal needs to sign in order to win the league again.
Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund
The departure of both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic this summer when their respective contracts expire leaves the Red Devils with a large gap to plug in central defence.
Therefore at least one new centre-back is a priority for van Gaal, but attracting top-class players to a club without Champions League football could prove difficult.
One player that everyone at Old Trafford seems desperate to sign is Hummels, with the 25-year-old a stalwart in both the Dortmund and Germany teams.
