The Argentine forward is known to be unsettled at Barca at the moment, and has been linked with a stunning £200m move to Stamford Bridge after falling out with current manager Luis Enrique.
Enrique’s days at Barcelona may now be numbered after a slow start to the season, and Messi hopes the club will bring Dutch tactician Rijkaard back in his place.
The 52-year-old was a big success with the Catalan giants between 2003 and 2008, but has not done a great deal since in spells with Galatasaray and the Saudi Arabia national team.
