The hits!
Didier Drogba
It seems strange that once there were genuine question marks over Dorgba’s ability to cut it in the Prem. The physical Ivorian went down far too easily, and didn’t seem to be a natural finisher. How wrong we were… 157 goals, a Champions League winning penalty, and a plethora of barn-storming performances have left us with no doubt that Drogba; on his day, he was simply unplayable.
Claude Makelele
You know you’ve done well at a club when a position is named after you. When Mourinho fielded Claude Makelele in a deep defensive midfield role in his 4-3-3, English football took note. Claude’s performances in that position re-shaped the English game, meaning hundreds of kids in the playground started requesting the ‘Makelele role’. The pint-sized Frenchman was simply outstanding, and provided the perfect base for Lampard and co. to get forward and help Chelsea win back-to-back titles.
Petr Cech
Another unheralded stalwart of the Chelsea side, Cech’s performances between the sticks have been crucial to their success. At £7million, he probably goes down as Roman’s biggest bargain, too. Although his form blipped after his nasty head injury, and cruel pundits said his decision to wear a scrum-cap on the football field affected his form; he has now rediscovered the goal-saving touch that helped him secure three Golden Glove Awards. The fact Chelsea keep loaning out Thibaut Courtois just shows how good he is.
