Jose Mourinho could be reunited with the Cameroonian striker thanks to Anzhi Makhachkala’s ongoing firesale.
With the odds of Manchester United selling unsettled centre-forward Wayne Rooney to tital rivals Chelsea decreasing by the day, Jose Mourinho has decided to move on to another target – Anzhi Makhachkala’s Samuel Eto’o.
The Daily Star quotes a Chelsea source who claims that the Blues are just days away from abandoning their pursuit of Rooney and moving on to former Inter Milan and Barcelona striker Eto’o.
Samuel Eto’o’s availability became widely known a fortnight ago when billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov announced that Anzhi would be purging their current squad in an effort to reduce wages and increase team spirit.
Eto’o enjoyed an incredibly successful spell at Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho. In the 2009-2010 season the Portuguese manager and the Cameroonian striker helped Inter to their greatest season of all time, winning the league, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.
31-year-old Eto’o is currently on a staggering £14m per year after tax, but is reportedly willing to take a pay-cut to move to Chelsea and play under Mourinho once more. There is no doubt that the forward would also cost considerably less than Rooney, with United already rebutting an offer in the region of £25m for the player.
With the first game of the new season just days away, and Chelsea set to face Manchester United in two Mondays’ time, Mourinho will want to seal any deal as soon as possible, regardless of the player.
