Mourinho wants to link-up with the former Inter striker.
Returning Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is preparing a surprise move for Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o, with the pair having won the treble together whilst at Inter Milan, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Eto’o is currently the highest paid footballer in the world with weekly wages of around £350,000, yet Anzhi have decided to try and reduce their annual wage bill from £120m to £50m – meaning big earners like the Cameroonian are set to be axed.
Despite being 32-years-old Mourinho is still interested in signing the forward, with the pair having a great working relationship from a 12-month stint together at Inter.
During that 2009/10 season Eto’o was instrumental in the Italians’ winning the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League – the only time the club has achieved such a feat.
Now Mourinho wants to reunite with the African as the 50-year-old believes the former Barcelona ace can be a short-term solution to the attacking problems at Stamford Bridge.
Whilst most areas of the squad are strong, Chelsea’s attack force consists of young, but relatively unproven talent Romelu Lukaku and underachievers Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.
The Portuguese boss has been trying to sign Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, but the Premier League champions are unwilling to sell and Mourinho may be moved to capitalise on Anzhi’s financial problems to bring in Eto’o instead.
The Cameroon international has spent two years in Russia, scoring 36 goals in 71 matches in all competitions.
