Chelsea have edged ahead of Arsenal in the race for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, and are reportedly readying a £35m offer.
The Daily Mirror carries the story from Portuguese newspaper Abola, in which it is seemingly revealed that it is the Stamford Bridge side who are the new favourites to land the Portuguese holding player.
English newspaper the Guardian also reports on Chelsea’s interest, stating: “With only 7,328 players on their books, Chelsea have finally decided to address the shortage by adding another; well, either that or the sport of preventing Arsenal from signing someone for whom their need is greater.
“Accordingly, they plan to offer £35m for William Carvalho – precisely £1m per Sporting Lisbon appearance. Already standing by is Roberto Martínez, fawning speech thanking Chelsea for their altruistic generosity prepared for when the player turns up at Goodison Park on loan.”
Despite his lack of experience, the young defensive midfielder had a superb season last term, helping Sporting Lisbon to a runners-up finish in the Primeira Liga, and was then part of Paulo Bento’s 2014 World Cup finals squad and may well be tempted by a move to Stamford Bridge.
