The Blues’ search for a new striker has taken them to the doorstep of City.
Chelsea could make a summer move for Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, who Blues manager Jose Mourinho believes should be this year’s player of the season, reports the Telegraph.
The Portuguese is vastly impressed by the manner in which Dzeko has come to City’s aid in times of need and reckons that he should have been chosen ahead of Luis Suarez as the Premier League’s player of the season.
Insisting that the Player of the Year award must go to a player from the title winning side, Mourinho sang the praises of Dzeko.
“If the champion is Man City – they need a point, no? – I would say a City player and if I have to choose one, I think I would choose Dzeko,” the 51-year-old said.
“Why? Because he was the third striker in the beginning of the season, he was even behind his manager’s first choices and when the team needed him, in crucial moments of the season, or because of Agüero injuries or because of [Alvaro] Negredo’s little moments of lack of form, and other important players injuring during the season – I think [David] Silva was injured, I think [Yaya] Touré was injured – he made the difference.”
The Blues tried and failed to sign the 28-year old Bosnian last summer, but they could be given another bite at the cherry this summer as the former Wolfsburg man only has one more year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Although the Citizens are trying their best to get Dzeko to agree a new deal at the club, the west Londoners could prise him away by promising him more regular first team football next season.
