Napoli turn down the hefty sum submitted by the Blues for Higuain.
The January transfer window hasn’t started brilliantly for Chelsea as Napoli reject their £50m bid for striker Gonzalo Higuain, reports the Telegraph.
The Blues are keen to bring in attacking support as the current trio of strikers Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres have all failed to find any real form this season.
Despite the fact manager Jose Mourinho suggested the west London club would not be making any bids for new forwards in the New Year, it seems the side have tried to land Higuain.
Yet with the Argentina international having only joined the Serie A club in the summer from Real Madrid for £34.5m they are clearly unwilling to part with the attacker.
Higuain has netted 14 goals in 22 matches since arriving in Italy, which has included four strikes in the Champions League – meaning the 26-year-old would be unavailable for any European duty at Stamford Bridge this term.
However, the Premier League outfit will not give up on bringing the Argentine to England just yet, especially as Rafael Benitez is keen on taking Juan Mata the other way.
The Spaniard is not a key member of Mourinho’s future plans and as a result several top clubs from across the continent have shown interest in Mata.
Yet if a deal could be struck up between the two sides that perhaps uses the Spain international as leverage in a transfer for Higuain, negotiations could still take place.
