The club are going to use the cash from the Spaniard’s transfer to sign Basel’s Salah.
Chelsea could be set to undermine Liverpool once again in the transfer market by hijacking their move for FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah, according to the Daily Mail.
The Reds have been interested in the Egyptian for some time and the Daily Express reports that the club have agreed a £10m deal.
Yet the Blues are said to have entered the race at the 11th hour and submitted their own bid for Salah, as they look to find a replacement for Juan Mata.
The Spain international is expected to complete a £37m plus move to Manchester United this week and the west Londoners will use some of that cash to land the Basel star.
Manager Jose Mourinho got a first hand look at the 21-year-old in this year’s Champions League as the Swiss champions were in the same group as Chelsea.
In fact Salah helped inspire Basel to two victories over the Premier League side – which included the first home defeat inflicted on Mourinho as Blues boss.
The attacking midfielder has been dubbed the ‘Egyptian Messi’ due to the youngster’s skill on the ball and eye for goal.
Salah has netted 10 times and provided six assists for Basel this term and also has 17 goals in 27 caps for the national team.
If a bidding war were to start between the two English sides for the attacking midfielder then the Merseysiders are likely to lose, due to their reluctance to pay any more than £12m to land the African.
This is not the first time this has happened, as in the summer Chelsea sneaked ahead of both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at the last minute to sign Willian.
