Blues boss says Lampard was close to MLS switch last season.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Frank Lampard nearly joined MLS outfit LA Galaxy last summer.
Lampard’s deal was set to expire in June 2013 but the England midfielder signed a one-year contract extension in May, ending months of speculation about his future.
During the previous campaign, Lampard was linked with a variety of clubs from Manchester United to LA Galaxy and Mourinho, who returned to the club in the summer, has admitted he could have been without the 35-year-old this season because he nearly moved to MLS.
“Lampard was almost signing a contract with LA Galaxy and he was not also feeling important in the team,” Mourinho said.
The former West Ham player was a key member of the first team squad during Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007 and has been used frequently by the Portuguese this season.
The 100-cap England star has made 15 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals and bagging three assists.
